Global terrestrial vegetation 'prediction': the use and abuse of climate and application models

The Holdridge life-zone classification scheme is examined as an example of an impacts (or application) model which is already being applied to output from global climate models representing both present-day and greenhouse-warmed environments. Although intrinsically very simple, the Holdridge scheme has been modified (at least ten versions already exist in the climatic change/impacts literature) and tuned. Very different conclusions can be drawn about future distributions of continental vegetation, depending upon the version of this application model that is selected, the input used and the subsequent assessment procedure employed.
